TAX & BUSINESS LAW

Raymond G. Adlington

Ray is the senior tax and legal mind on the bench. With more than twenty-five years at the top tier of the Canadian legal profession, he is the counsel UHNW families call when the tax position is consequential, the structure is layered, and the cost of getting it wrong is generational.

Within the firm, Ray leads succession, corporate reorganisation, intergenerational wealth transfer, and M&A structuring — the work that turns a sale, a freeze, or a passing-on into a position the family can hold for decades. He is the answer to the question the existing accountant or lawyer cannot fully reach: how does this all fit together, and what survives the next generation.

A Past President of the Canadian Bar Association, four-year member of the CBA–CPA Canada Joint Committee on Taxation, and former Managing Partner and CEO of McInnes Cooper, Ray has advised the Department of Finance on tax policy and legislative drafting. He has been named a Best Lawyer in Canada for Tax and for Trusts and Estates every year since 2011, including Lawyer of the Year in Trusts and Estates.

Within the mandate, Ray’s work is held under the same confidentiality and institutional care that define his decades in private practice — with one difference: it sits at a single seat, alongside the rest of the family’s position, where the integration is the value.
